Steel, Glass, Wood
13 x 15 x 2 inches (each)
In this intimate trio from her Justification series, Mary Donovan transforms reclaimed industrial elements into poetic meditations on balance, restraint, and quiet tension. Each 13 x 15 inch wall sculpture is framed in warm, time-worn wood — a grounding architectural boundary that both contains and elevates the interior composition.
The first piece suspends oxidized steel rings in vertical alignment, their weight and gravity softened by delicate hanging wires. One ring drops beyond the frame’s edge, suggesting movement beyond imposed limits — a quiet refusal to remain confined.
The second composition centers a luminous blue glass form cradled within steel mesh and perforated metal. The interplay of transparency and density creates a sense of protected fragility — strength guarding light.
The third work introduces flowing, vine-like white elements intertwined with subtle red accents. Organic lines press against the rigid geometry of the frame, evoking growth, memory, and the persistence of life within structure.
Throughout the series, Donovan juxtaposes industrial steel with glass and carved wood, balancing precision and imperfection, containment and release. The works invite viewers to consider what it means to justify space — emotionally, physically, and metaphorically.
Together, these pieces speak to resilience, containment, and the quiet poetry found within constraint.
